Shetlander Christie Williamson<\/a> is the focus of this third \u201cpoets in exile\u201d collection in our experimental extension of the Island Voices \u201ccapture and curation\u201d model into new contexts and languages. This follows on from Jamaican in Wales<\/a> with Audrey West, and Gaelic in Shetland<\/a> with Donald S Murray, all supported by CIALL<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As the documentary<\/a> reveals, while Christie has been a resident of Glasgow for over twenty years, he has also travelled extensively to present his poems around the world, while keeping a firm grip on his Shetland roots from which he derives so much inspiration. The documentary also presents snatches from his poetry and a conversation with Chris Stout. Lengthier examples are presented in additional video clips.<\/p>\n

In the first poetry clip<\/a>, Christie recites a selection of his Shetlandic poems from his collection \u201cOo an Feddirs\u201d. In the second clip<\/a> he reads from \u201cDoors tae Naewye\u201d. The third clip<\/a> features contributions to the collections \u201cBreak in Case of Silence\u201d, and \u201cWhat Winter Wants\u201d.<\/p>\n

The examples of unscripted speech are from a conversation in which Christie talks to fellow Shetlander Chris Stout<\/a>, who is also now a Glasgow resident.<\/p>\n

In Part 1<\/a> the topics covered include Shetland schooldays and hostel living, ferry journeys to the mainland in student days, and what living in Glasgow is like for Shetlanders.<\/p>\n

In Part 2<\/a>, they talk about what it\u2019s like to go home to Shetland for visits, and how mobile phones, particularly in the wake of Covid, have enabled Shetlanders to keep in closer contact.<\/p>\n

Since original publication four new versions of the documentary have been added to the collection in Welsh<\/a><\/strong>, Jamaican<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0Catalan<\/a><\/strong>, and Portuguese<\/a><\/strong> with accompanying transcripts and background information.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n
