{"id":4093,"date":"2018-11-20T11:34:59","date_gmt":"2018-11-20T11:34:59","guid":{"rendered":"hhttps:\/\/www.northpost.co.uk\/uhi\/?p=4093"},"modified":"2018-11-20T11:34:59","modified_gmt":"2018-11-20T11:34:59","slug":"reading-island-voices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.northpost.co.uk\/uhi\/2018\/11\/20\/reading-island-voices\/","title":{"rendered":"Reading Island Voices &#8211; Aloud!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/ioe\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4095 size-full\" title=\"UCL Institute of Education\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northpost.co.uk\/uhi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/ioesigncrop.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3174\" height=\"1775\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The \u201cReading Aloud in Britain Today\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/ioe\/research\/projects\/reading-aloud-britain-today\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RABiT<\/a>) project is run by <a href=\"http:\/\/iris.ucl.ac.uk\/iris\/browse\/profile?upi=STDUN79\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Sam Duncan<\/a>, a teacher, researcher and teacher educator working in adult literacy studies at the UCL Institute of Education in London.<\/p>\n<p>The project\u00a0is a two-year study which aims\u00a0to capture the contemporary reading aloud practices of as many different adults as possible across Scotland, England and Wales, and to reach &#8220;people of all different ages, genders, ethnicities, faiths, cultural, educational and language backgrounds, in both urban and rural locations&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"hhttps:\/\/www.northpost.co.uk\/uhi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/reading-island-voices-talk-script.pdf\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4090 size-medium\" title=\"&quot;Reading Island Voices&quot;: Script\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northpost.co.uk\/uhi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/rabittalk-2.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"128\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.northpost.co.uk\/uhi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/rabittalk-2.jpg 2046w, https:\/\/www.northpost.co.uk\/uhi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/rabittalk-2-300x128.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.northpost.co.uk\/uhi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/rabittalk-2-1024x438.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.northpost.co.uk\/uhi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/rabittalk-2-768x328.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.northpost.co.uk\/uhi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/rabittalk-2-1536x657.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Sam organised a symposium on 17<sup>th<\/sup> November as a part of her project, with the title \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/ioe\/events\/2018\/nov\/everyday-reading-explorations-literacy-and-oracy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Everyday Reading: Explorations of Literacy and Oracy<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In a gathering of researchers and educators from around the country, Gordon Wells was delighted to get the opportunity to speak about the Island Voices project, and its own approach to speech and writing and the uses made of Reading Aloud. Gordon\u2019s subject was \u201c<a href=\"hhttps:\/\/www.northpost.co.uk\/uhi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/reading-island-voices-talk-script.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reading Island Voices: Issues around the Primacy of Speech and the Privileging of Literacy, from a Hebridean Viewpoint<\/a>\u201d. You can read the script of his talk <a href=\"hhttps:\/\/www.northpost.co.uk\/uhi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/reading-island-voices-talk-script.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s probably best to read it online so you can make use of the embedded links and clickable screenshots to supporting video clips and other webpages.
