Grogarry Lodge: Community Cèilidh “par excellence”!

Owned by the community company Stòras Uibhist, Grogarry Lodge is a remarkable venue. And last Thursday it hosted a remarkable evening, when learners of English and Gaelic from various classes around Uist gathered for an end-of-term celebration. The event was organised by the recently formed Language and Culture group at Cothrom, and was aimed at celebrating the rich linguistic diversity in the community. For one night, learners became teachers and shared something of their own languages with others eager to learn – including phrases of German, Italian, Polish and Russian, as well as English and Gaelic. Community members and followers of Guthan nan Eilean will recognise many of the faces, and perhaps be pleasantly surprised at the humour and talent on display that might not previously have been suspected!

Airson barrachd fhaighinn a-mach faodar fòn a chur gu Alison Dix air 07774 570349.

Legacy classes from the now complete ESF-funded phase of Island Voices are ongoing in Berneray and Benbecula, with the same teachers giving continuity. As previously, full details on the ESOL provision is available through Cothrom – 01878 700910.

Movie Maker? Dèan fhèin e!

Seo eisimpleir eile dhen t-seòrsa rud a b’ urrainn dhuinn dèanamh – ma thèid againn air an obair a tha sinn air a bhith a’ leasachadh a thoirt air adhart chun na h-ath ìre.

Bha clas airson luchd-ionnsachaidh na Beurla aig Cothrom o chionn bliadhna no dhà. Agus chuir iad romhpa fhèin pròiseact sònraichte a choileanadh – film goirid a dhèanamh a bhiodh a’ sealltainn na h-obrach a bha iad ris, agus an dòigh beatha a bh’ aca sna h-eileanan.

Abair deagh eacarsaich a bh’ ann airson cànan ionnsachadh! An toiseach bha aca ri deasbad agus aontachadh dè na seallaidhean a bha iad ag iarraidh san stòiridh: am bàta-aiseig, beathaichean, eunlaith, muir is tìr, na h-àiteachan far an robh iad a’ fuireach agus ag obair, agus gu sònraichte na diofar rudan a bhiodh iad a’ dèanamh nan obair làitheil.

An uair sin thug sinn camara dhaibh airson na dealbhan sin a thogail. As dèidh sin bha aca ri na dealbhan a chur ann an òrdugh, a’ cleachdadh Windows Movie Maker. Obair caran teicnigeach a bha sin, ach rinn iad fhèin an gnothach air (ag ionnsachadh sgilean ùra IT aig an aon àm ’s a bha iad ag ionnsachadh a’ chànain).

Agus an uair sin, ’s iad fhèin a sgrìobh an aithris a rachadh leis na dealbhan (le cuideachadh an siud ’s an seo bhon luchd-teagaisg). Agus a-rithis, ’s iad fhèin a chlàraich an guthan a’ toirt seachad na h-aithris, le ceòl ann cuideachd bho oileanaich sa cholaiste ionadail.

Obair mhòr a rinn iad, a thug orra an cànan a chleachdadh ann an suidheachaidhean ùra, agus a thug misneachd dhaibh leis cho soirbheachail ’s a bha iad aig an deireadh.

Nis, ma thèid aig luchd-ionnsachaidh na Beurla air rudeigin mar sin a dhèanamh, a bheil adhbhar sam bith nach gabhadh rudeigin coltach ris dèanamh sa Ghàidhig – le luchd-ionnsachaidh no fileantaich? Sin an rud a tha sinn airson fheuchainn – a’ gabhail ris aig an aon àm gum bi feadhainn ann a bhiodh airson tòiseachadh le audio a-mhàin, ’s dòcha, no sgrìobhadh. Tha Am Pàipear air duais eile fhaighinn am bliadhna. Nach e bhiodh math stuthan ioma-mheadhan bhon choimhearsnachd a chur air an làrach spaideil aca!

Seo am film a rinn iad:

English summary

This was a project for English language learners from Poland and Latvia who wanted to make a film about their life and work here in the Hebrides.

First of all they had to agree the contents of the film, and what sort of pictures they wanted – scenery, animal life, the places where they lived and worked, and particularly the different things their work involved. Then they borrowed the camera to take the pictures. After that they edited a picture sequence together using Windows Movie Maker, simultaneously developing IT and language skills.

Finally, the learners themselves scripted the voiceover commentary (with some help from teachers) and recorded the narration. All in all, it was a very fruitful learning process which helped to build the learners’ confidence in using the language in new situations.

It’s this kind of work we want to develop bilingually in the next stage of the Island Voices project – recognising also that, for some, audio recording or written work will be a more comfortable jumping off point. Am Pàipear is Community Newspaper of the Year again. Wouldn’t it be good to see multimedia materials from the community on their site!

Classes Continue

While the Series Two video production component of the Island Voices/Guthan nan Eilean project is now complete, classes for English and Gaelic learners are continuing into 2011. Cothrom have restarted ESOL classes in Benbecula. Details are available from the centre, or by phoning 01878 700910. And Gaelic classes are running again in Berneray, this time with split levels and different timings. Alison Dix, who also co-ordinates the Guthan Bheàrnaraigh project, is the contact point for information on 07774 570349.

Guthan Bheàrnaraigh – Berneray Voices

Berneray and other Island Voices mingled harmoniously on Friday night (26th November) at a cèilidh in the Lobster Pot – where Archie Campbell runs his weekly class for Gaelic learners on the island. The “Berneray Voices” project, with help from Bòrd na Gàidhlig, hosted this event aimed at bringing learners and fluent speakers together.

Take your pick of the following sound files to get a taste of how it went.

Benbecula English Class: Location Filming!

The Cothrom class in English for Speakers of Other Languages is held in a very well appointed upstairs room in the new Balivanich Community Hall. Mary Morrison leads the class with assistance from Suzanne Morrison. It’s a multilingual classroom with learners from Latvia and Poland, who also speak Italian and Russian. There’s a wide range of English levels in the class, with some members having arrived in the Hebrides several years ago, while others have been here just a few months.  But there’s a strong desire to learn in the group and a positive spirit of co-operation,  so newer arrivals are helped by those who have been here longer.

Last night the Island Voices project co-ordinator Gordon Wells visited the group, so class members had a chance to practise introducing themselves – saying who they were, where they were from, and where they were working now. They also talked about some of their favourite parts of Benbecula. Because it was a very pleasant summer evening the group then made a plan to tour round some of these sites and make some short video recordings.

Favourite spots were the beach, of course, and the community riding school where they got some lovely pictures of the horses.

Another highlight was Benbecula airport – because that’s the quickest way to Poland! And Olga wanted to make a film about Balivanich Primary School, where her daughter has been a pupil for three years now.

Here she talks about her impressions of the school, and how much her daughter enjoys it.

Berneray Gaelic Class

Island Voices Co-ordinator Gordon Wells was in Berneray last night, visiting one of the classes for Gaelic learners run by Archie Campbell. The class is held once a fortnight at Iris and Bob’s “The Lobster Pot” – the perfect community venue – with tea and coffee supplied by Iris, who is also a keen member of the class.

Archie led the group through a range of exercises and games during the evening. They practised talking about their likes and dislikes in food and the weather, and about their favourite time of the year. Telling the time also gave them the opportunity to practise their counting skills.

Archie also floated a suggestion that the group might go out for a walk some time, though he didn’t go as far as asking them to cut his peats for him… At the end of the session a board game from the Early Learning Centre (ages 2-6) took everyone back to their childhood – with Iris taking the winner’s prize!

Here class member Mary McCormick talks about where she’s from, where she lives now, and some of her likes and preferences – showing that some serious learning really was going on, amongst all the fun…

Learning English in the Hebrides

Following the conversation with Archie Campbell about learning Gaelic, Gordon Wells talks about opportunities for learning English. Some previous projects have been innovative, with learners doing their own filming. There’s an example here. A good contact point to find out about classes running now is Cothrom.

Tha clasaichean anns na h-eileanan airson luchd-ionnsachaidh na Beurla cuideachd. Seo eisimpleir inntinneach – rinn na h-oileanaich film dhaibh fhèin mun dòigh-beatha aca an seo. Ma tha duine sam bith airson fiosrachadh a bharrachd air clasaichean a tha gan ruith an-dràsta faodaidh iad fios a chur dhan bhuidheann-trèanaidh Cothrom.

Local Language Teacher

Bidh video san t-sreath ùr le Eairdsidh Caimbeul a’ sealltainn mar a bhios daoine a’ buain na mònadh.

Tha Eairdsidh an sàs gu mòr ann an teagasg na Gàidhlig. An seo tha e a’ bruidhinn mu na clasaichean a bhios e a’ ruith ann an Uibhist, agus carson a tha an obair seo a’ còrdadh ris. Tha e cuideachd a’ toirt iomradh air cùrsa ùr sònraichte a bhios air a ruith le Stòras Uibhist.

There will be a video in the new series featuring Archie Campbell, showing how people cut peats.  Here Archie talks about his interest in teaching Gaelic in his home community in Uist. He mentions the various classes he’s running at the moment, and highlights an interesting new development – a weeklong immersion course to be run by Stòras Uibhist, which will have strong community links.Listen here to the English interview:

Welcome Point

Cothrom held a “Welcome Point” event in the Sgoil Lìonacleit library in Benbecula on Tuesday 3rd November for anyone interested in English for Speakers of Other Languages. Tea, coffee, and snacks were available for an encouraging flow of enquirers about learning and teaching, alongside advice and information about classes that could be set up to meet individual or group needs. Visitors registered their interest and went home with a number to call – and a copy of the Island Voices DVD to whet their appetite for more learning! Many thanks to Felicity Bramwell in the library for hosting the event, and pointing out the free Internet access and other resources available there.
