Selected clips from the first series of the Guthan nan Eilean/Island Voices project move to a new level when they get a public outing in the Screen Machine, courtesy of the Small Islands Film Festival in Benbecula, 19th-21st June. The Craigard and Taste of Uist films are shown alongside other locally produced works. There is also an opportunity for discussion. The whole project is intended to be interactive, open to, and reflective of the local community. Another chance for people to feed in their own suggestions…

Workshops
The first tranche of workshops for tutors and volunteers interested in developing video skills is now complete. Workshops were held in South Uist, Skye, and Harris, with a good mixture of college staff, community education and voluntary sector workers attending. The workshops covered basic introductions to camera work and editing, as well as a consideration of how tutors can involve their own learners in video production. It may be possible to hold another workshop after the summer break, probably in North Uist, for anyone who couldn’t attend any of the first three.
Innovation and Creativity
The POOLS project, out of which the Guthan nan Eilean work was born, has won a European Award for Innovation and Creativity in Lifelong Learning. Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, which co-ordinated the project, has a press release here.
Update and suggestions so far for filming
An earlier post on my personal blog listed topics already put forward, and attracted additional suggestions. Material so far recorded covers the following:

5. Children’s Parliament in Barra and Benbecula
6. Boatbuilding and Crofting Skills
7. Crofting and biodiversity
8. Outdoor leisure pursuits
I’m very pleased with the interviews I’ve got so far on the topics above. Among other things there’s a very good mix of ages amongst the speakers. There’s plenty more to do, but it’s beginning to look like the new material might divide fairly naturally into three separate sub-headings under the broad “environmental” theme: “Outdoor activities”, “Generations”, and “Enterprise”. I hasten to add that’s just the way it’s looking right now. This could well change as more suggestions come in. Comments welcome below!

This blog has been set up by Gordon Wells specifically to channel communication about the Guthan nan Eilean/Island Voices project. Numerous ideas, comments, and suggestions have come through already, including via Gordon’s personal blog, but it probably makes sense for the project to have its own platform. News on progress will be posted here from time to time by Gordon, so if you’re interested in the project do keep visiting. And if you have further suggestions to make do please use the comment box below the posts.
